about

Sentenced in Maidstone on 4th October 1798 for stealing sugar, Billy was sent to Australia as a convict. After he was released he spent his life working in Sydney Harbour, never too far from being in trouble with the law.

lyrics

What you gonna do, Billy Blue
The law's always one step ahead of you

Oh, if the taste of something sweet
Didn't lead to chains around my feet
And the judge that put me away
Had never ever heard of Botany Bay

What you gonna do, Billy Blue
The law's always one step ahead of you

Oh, if the taste of that rum
Didn't lead to what they said I'd done
And those barrels just came to me
I swear to God I found them in the sea

A simple life and nothing more
A simple life for this old commodore

Oh, if the stone that knocked him down
I'd never picked it up off the ground
And the one they say I hid
For what it's worth I say I never did

Oh Billy Blue
Always one step ahead of you
Oh Billy Blue
Always one step, ahead of you
Always one step ahead
