The Elephant Hotel

from Many More Ways Than One by Wildwood Jack

/

about

In 1884 a huge hotel in the shape of an elephant was built on Coney Island. It's said that at the time it was the first thing you'd see on the horizon as you sailed into New York.

lyrics

Tell you now I'm done picking coal off the rails
This bird of passage is ready to sail
Bought me a ticket to the land of the free
Goddess of good fortune is calling to me

Nothing to pack, nothing to lose
A piece of home in each of my shoes
Four winds blow and we sail away
To the west we pray

From the shadows a man said to me
Sailing in, the first thing we see
Twice as high as an elephant's eye
From the top you can touch the sky

And my friend there's work for you
Rolling down Surf Avenue
There's no need to ever feel alone
Every lady needs a chaperone

Concertina, Saxophone
Violin, Slide Trombone
The sound of the liberty bell
The welcome of the Elephant Hotel
